Brazil is to build a state-of-the-art central laboratory capable of researching the evolution of the rarest and most dangerous emerging diseases. The centre will be one of the first projects of the new healthcare monitoring body, the Secretaria de Vigilancia em Saude (see this page). At the same time, the national network of reference laboratories is to be upgraded, enabling these to monitor infectious outbreaks and other diseases more efficiently and more safely, says the health ministry.
