Spain is preparing to launch a trial on the use of stem cells in repairing heart tissue damaged by infarction. So announced health minister Ana Pastor, during the official launch of the book Messenchymal stem cells: biology and potential clinical uses, in Alicante, on June 9. The event sought to raise the profile of stem cell technology and the need for more research in this field. The Spanish programme to promote R&D co-operation - Redes Tematicas de Investigacion Cooperativa - has a budget of E10.5m ($12.5m) in its first year.
