Executive Summary
A recent survey by the German diabetes society (DDG) claims that all types of diabetes are set to rise in the next few years and will not be restricted to elderly individuals. Some 8% of Germans are currently known to suffer from diabetes, but the DDG says that a further 8% are simply unaware of their condition. Furthermore, the survey suggested that another 16% of the population displayed a potential for contracting the disease, a condition referred to by experts as "pre-diabetes". "This means that some 40% of the population is affected," said Professor Wieland Kiess, newly appointed president of the DDG.
