Executive Summary
Medical device manufacturers are likely to see their patenting costs in the EU cut by half. At present manufacturers pay an average of E50,000 ($53,000) for patent protection in just eight countries of the EU. But proposed Community patent, on which the EU's Competitiveness Council has just reached a common political approach, would cut these costs to an average of E25,000 for the expanded EU market of 25 countries. This remains significantly greater than the average E10,000 cost of a patent in Japan or the US.
