Dr Kevin Woods has been appointed chief executive of NHS Scotland and head of the Scottish Executive's Health Department, it was announced today. His responsibilities include leading the central management of the NHS, across 15 area health boards and 8 special health boards. He will be accountable for the efficiency and performance of the service and its annual budget of £7bn ($13.5bn). He takes up his post on January 17 2005.
