German optical specialist Carl Zeiss has agreed to pay $1.1bn - including the assumption of $285m of debt - to merge its eyeglass business with San Diego-based lens maker Sola. Oberkochen-based Carl Zeiss's ophthalmology business, Carl Zeiss Meditec, also announced the formal closing of its acquisition of Laser Diagnostic Therapies, which broadens the firm's position in the market for equipment to diagnose and manage glaucoma.
