The French government's proposal to increase the sickness insurance budget for 2005 by just 3.2% on the 2004 figure of E129bn ($156bn) has met with outcry in the healthcare sector. It is not enough, the medical unions argue, given that the expenditure for this year will result in a budget deficit of E13.2bn. The increase barely covers inflation.
