That was the statement made by Commissioner David Byrne during his speech at the 7th European Health Forum in Bad Gastein (Austria) on October 8, his last "Gastein" as European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection. The focus of Mr Byrne's talk was that global healing needs global health. He said that if the EU wants to make a real difference to global security in the long term, it should start with global health, since this would transform individual perceptions and collective behaviour on security fundamentally. "You must first have a future," he said, "before working with others to secure it."
