Last week saw the last step in formalising the establishment of the UK's new Health Protection Agency, whose formation is part of new plans to radically restructure the NHS, from 38 bodies into 20. These reforms aim to reduce UK healthcare bureaucracy and result in savings estimated in excess of £500m ($922m) per year by the time they are fully implemented in 2008 - expenditure for the bodies involved was £4.8bn in 2003-04.
