A further ten UK NHS hospitals were last week granted Foundation Trust (FT) status, a designation that makes them free-standing legal entities, and while remaining not-for-profit, and gives them greater freedoms on borrowing, investment and pay systems. This second batch of designations doubles the number of trusts to 20 (see Clinica No 1103, p 6).
