Advancement in medical technology and changes in demography must prompt a rethink of hospital organisation in Austria, says Gabriele Kogelbauer, vice president of the Vienna doctors chamber (AKW). However, this cannot be effectively achieved, she claims, simply by reducing the number of hospital beds, as suggested by Josef Kandlhofer, director of the Hauptverband social insurance fund, in the Presse.
