Executive Summary
The UK's Department of Health has moved to ensure that the NHS will derive greater commercial benefit from the "new inventions and pioneering medical equipment [that are] being constantly developed" by its staff. The comments came with the appointment of Marie Smith as the new director of NHS Intellectual Property. She gains responsibility for nine NHS Innovations Hubs, which provide IP management services to all NHS organisations, in partnership with academic institutions. Dr Smith, who joins from incubator company Manchester Innovation, where she was appointed CEO in 1999, takes over in September from Dr Tony Bates, who is regarded as the pioneer of the IP agenda and the NHS Innovations Hubs network.
