Executive Summary
The UK's Department of Health today announced the appointment of Marie Smith as director of NHS Intellectual Property. Dr Smith will have responsibility for nine NHS Innovations Hubs, which provide IP management services to all NHS organisations, in partnership with academic institutions. The initiative seeks to help the NHS derive commercial benefits from the "new inventions and pioneering medical equipment [that are] being constantly developed" by NHS staff. She takes over in September from Dr Tony Bates, of the DoH's R&D department, standard-bearer of the IP agenda and pioneer of the NHS Innovations Hubs. Dr Smith joins from incubator company Manchester Innovation, where she was appointed CEO in 1999.
