Executive Summary
The Italian health ministry has established a national healthcare research commission (Commissione Nazionale per la Ricerca Sanitaria). Its greatest influence on healthcare delivery will include defining how to assess the clinical and cost-effectiveness of technologies and procedures that do not yet have an adequate clinical evidence base. More generally, it will be responsible for establishing the national healthcare R&D programme, propose new research areas and initiatives and promote linking these with other national and EU-wide R&D programmes. The commission's executive chairman is Dr Giovanni Zotta, the health ministry's director for scientific and technological research.
