The European Commission has adopted the Communication "Towards a European Strategy for Nanotechnology", with the aim of raising the profile of nanotechnologies to an institutional level. The main issues at stake include increasing investment and co-ordination of R&D, to reinforce the industrial exploitation of nanotechnologies, and developing a world-class competitive R&D infrastructure. The strategy also aims to ensure that "European R&D excellence is translated into wealth-generating products and processes".
