The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare (SOS) has appointed Kjell Asplund as its new director general. He replaces Kerstin Wigzell, who has been in the post since 1998. Professor Asplund was last year appointed deputy director general after serving as chairman of the board at the Swedish Council on Technology Assessment in Health Care (SBU). He has also been professor of medicine at Umea University and senior physician at Norrlands University Hospital.
