Executive Summary
Plans to launch research into the care of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) suggests there is room for manufacturers to address the problem from an equipment design perspective. The University of Edinburgh is launching next month a five-year study of ways to fight antibiotic-resistant VAP. It is estimated that as many as 20% of patients who require treatment on a ventilator machine may develop VAP and the infection is fatal in a high proportion of cases.
