The Philippines has launched a national newborn screening programme to address its high infant and under-fives mortality rate. The initiative, which implements the 2004 Newborn Screening Act, will focus on early detection and management of congenital metabolic disorders that can result in mental retardation or death, if left untreated. The objectives of the programme are: universal access; sustainability; and awareness building among health practitioners and the public.
