Executive Summary
The medical equipment needs of a potential pandemic influenza were among the subjects of an international summit of health ministers and other officials, held today in Rome, Italy. Among the decisions reached at the sixth ministerial meeting of the Global Health Security Initiative (GHSI) was a commitment to work with the World Health Organization "to develop and test protocols for early containment across a full range of public health interventions, including medical counter-measures and equipment". Other measures include a number of initiatives to ensure adequate information-sharing. The GHSI comprises health ministers and other senior officials from the Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the UK and the US, together with the EU commissioner for health and representatives from the WHO.
