HealthTronics Surgical Services is to distribute in the US the Ablatherm high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) device developed by EDAP TMS. HealthTronics, of Marietta, Georgia, will first conduct clinical trials aimed at obtaining FDA premarket approval for the device for the minimally invasive treatment of prostate cancer. The news came on the same day as Misonix/Focus Surgery announced the commencement of distribution of a similar device, Sonoblate 500, in Europe. EDAP TMS's technology is already sold in Europe, where it has been used in 4,500 patients.
