In what it claims will help it address a growing demand from physicians for more defibrillation energy, Guidant can now sell a high energy (HE) version of its Vitality implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The device, which has a small, physiologic profile and long life, is scheduled for launch this month. Data suggest that over half of the ICDs used in the US have higher energy output capability, Guidant said.
