EU's health data "fail to reflect recent trends"

The first set of European Community Health Indicators has been published in the framework of the EU's health monitoring Programme and Community Public Health Programme 2003-2008. These reflect the main priorities in public health policies of the European Commission and member states, and show considerable variation in breast and cervical cancer screening coverage, as well as in the number of MRI units and CT scanners available in different countries in Europe. But some of the data are old: statistics given for breast and cancer screening coverage are based on 1996 figures. The statistics on the number of MRI units and CT scans, meanwhile, are based on OECD Health Data for 2004, but date back to 2002. Other health service data available include numbers of PTCA, hip and cataract surgeries, to the end of 2003, where available.
