El Salvador sets up ethics committee - lessons for low-resource countries

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

A research ethics committee has been established in El Salvador, in a move that is being used to highlight the barriers to healthcare development that a lack of such bodies means for other low-resource countries. "The absence of a research ethics committee either restricts or prevents just the collaboration needed to improve medical care in countries with limited resources," claims Dr Miguela Caniza, of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (Memphis, Tennessee), which collaborated in the El Salvador project. A research paper on the subject appears in the December issue of Lancet Oncology.
