There are around 7,000 diseases classified as rare and around five more are discovered every week. So said the Spanish federation for rare diseases (FEDER) today in an event to raise the profile of the needs of this area of healthcare at government level. Some 5,000 rare diseases have no known cure, reducing the life expectation in almost 30% of cases to less than five years, FEDER told the Senate's rare diseases committee.
