Executive Summary
ATS Medical has received European market approval for an improved version of its open pivot mechanical heart valve. The company said it has maximised the haemodynamic performance of the new device, called Open Pivot AP360, and has incorporated a cuff design that it believes will extend its appeal to a broader spectrum of surgeons. The flexible, flanged polyester cuff provides improved suturability, flexibility and conformability, explained the Minneapolis, Minnesota firm. As with the earlier open pivot design, the new valve has no recesses or cavities that can promote thrombus formation, and incorporates a strengthening band of the cobalt-chrome alloy MP35N, providing for compressive strength and durability.
