The debate surrounding female genital mutilation has served to highlight what has been described as a "burgeoning industry" in laser-based female genital aesthetic surgery in the western world. In an article (published today in the British Medical Journal) that is heavily critical of what is seen as the flipside of what is customary and socially-important in non-western cultures, turning the concept of female genital mutilation on its head, Dr Ronan Conroy, of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, describes the "burgeoning industry" of laser vaginoplasty and related surgical procedures as the "surgical victimisation of women in our culture".
