Fourteen of Chile's 15 pre-paid private medical insurance companies (ISAPREs) have announced that they are not increasing premiums to provide medical cover for the expanded Plan AUGE. This ground-breaking "universal access and explicit guarantees" healthcare delivery programme launched in 2002 was, from July 1, extended from 25 conditions to 40, at an estimated additional cost of Peso210bn ($375m), with Peso140bn met by public funding and Peso69bn by private insurance (see Clinica No 1213, p 3).
