Self-testing can defuse diabetes time bomb for German federal budgets

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Rising expenditure on the provision of treatment and care for diabetics in Germany - some five million people are currently receiving some form of medical treatment for the condition - is threatening to blow a hole in health and social care budgets. The secondary conditions - infarct, stroke or amputation - are the main cost factors for the sickness funds, says diagnostic industry association VDGH, adding that regular self-testing of blood sugar levels by individuals can play a key role in cutting the long-term burden on the national budgets.
