Executive Summary

The Chinese government has reported the country's 18th case of human infection with the H5N1 avian flu virus. Contrary to recent cases being investigated for their apparent isolated nature (in areas where poultry outbreaks have not been recorded for a considerable time), the case confirmed yesterday in the south-western province of Sichuan has been linked to recent avian flu outbreaks.
