Executive Summary
Medtronic has received US FDA 510(k) clearance to sell what it claims is the most advanced and compact cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) heart-lung machine. The Performer CPB integrates the primary functions and safety features needed to perform cardiopulmonary bypass and related circulatory support procedures, along with enhanced user conveniences, into a reduced sized instrument, responding to the spatial demands in the operating room. It occupies only a 20- by 22-inch space, just a third of the footprint of the "time-honoured" heart-lung consoles, said the company. The product is designed and manufactured by Medolla, Italy-based firm RaND and exclusively distributed by Medtronic.
