Brazil embraces targets of maternity/infant drive

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Brazil is reporting significant falls in neonatal and infant mortality, but more must now be done if it is to meet the ambitious targets set for 2006 and 2015. Neonatal and infant mortality have fallen by 7.3% and 8.7%, respectively, since the launch in 2004 of the "national pact" that the federal government signed with the state authorities to implement an antenatal and neonatal care model developed by the United Nations. The pact came with a RS$31.2m (US$14.7m) investment in the relevant services, focused on the 78 worst-performing municipalities.
