Executive Summary
Covalon Technologies has received US approval to sell what it claims is the first hydrated collagen dressing with antimicrobial silver, CovaClear Ag. While silver ion is a broad-spectrum antiseptic that allows the dressing to be an effective antimicrobial barrier, a moist wound-healing environment is known to improve the healing process and reduce scarring, said the Mississauga, Ontario firm. The product is also transparent, allowing clinicians to monitor high-risk wounds without having to remove the dressing. CovaClear Ag is indicated for the management of full and partial thickness wounds. According to Covalon, the total US market for moist dressings (hydrocolloids/hydrogels) exceeds $500m per year.
