Executive Summary
Canadian health service provider Capital Health has completed a two-week trial "blitz" of hip and knee replacement operations, in a bid to reduce the waiting list. As a result of the initiative, 72 more patients than usual underwent surgery. 122 surgeries were performed in the two weeks, compared to the 100 usually conducted each month. Currently, there are around 1,600 patients awaiting surgery. The trial was conducted at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It will now be evaluated and its findings will be shared to see if the same technique could be used to tackle wait lists in other areas.
