French equipment funding scheme underway

The regional authorities in Nord Pas-de-Calais, the north-western-most region of France, have become the first to take part in a controversial scheme whereby the regional authorities will finance medical equipment purchases in return for consultative seats on the regional hospital agency (RHA), alongside representatives from the sickness insurance bodies and the state. This is part of a four-year trial scheme, conceived within the context of a law on decentralisation, which the government launched in January 2005. For a region to take part, it must be officially nominated by governmental decree.
