Executive Summary
Varian Medical Systems has received 510(k) clearance from the US FDA for its dosing technology for proton beam therapy. The "proton scanning dose algorithm" offers physicians greater control when targeting tumours and other abnormalities, allowing them to avoid damage to surrounding healthy tissues, said the Palo Alto, California firm. The technology, which will be incorporated into the firm's Eclipse treatment planning software, will enable doctors to optimise dosing distributions in three dimensions.
