Terumo Cardiovascular Systems and Luna Innovations are to jointly market in the US Luna's EDAC Quantifier, a monitor that detects and classifies emboli, for use during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures. The FDA-cleared device uses quantitative ultrasound technology to noninvasively detect gaseous emboli - air bubbles - in up to three extracorporeal bypass circuit lines. These bubbles are created during invasive surgery, such as heart bypass or valve replacement procedures, and can potentially cause brain damage if introduced into the cerebral blood flow.
