The European Commission is the greatest single investor in nanotechnology, accounting for one-third of global public funding, it claims. Under the EU's 6th Framework Programme, the EU has allocated E1.4bn ($2bn) to 550 projects in this field, and there is due to be a significant increase - perhaps a doubling - in the amount that is allocated to nanotechnology research in the context of the 7th Framework Programme.
