Executive Summary
Renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Professor Sir Bruce Keogh has been appointed medical director of the UK's National Health Service (NHS) and deputy to chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson. As a "champion of clinical engagement throughout the service", he will be instrumental in taking forward the NHS's investment and reform plans, which are "just over half way through", according to NHS chief executive David Nicholson.
