Executive Summary
Alan Johnson has been appointed to head the UK's Department of Health, in a radical overhaul of the government cabinet, announced today by the new prime minister, Gordon Brown. As secretary of state for health, Mr Johnson replaces Patricia Hewitt, who had resigned from the post in the run-up to the cabinet reshuffle; she reportedly declined an offer of a different role in the new cabinet. The team of junior ministers that will serve under Mr Johnson (formerly education secretary) has yet to be announced.
