Executive Summary
Last week saw both Zimmer and Smith & Nephew (S&N) ink deals to expand their ever-growing portfolios. Zimmer and tissue-based implant innovator Regeneration Technologies, of Alachua, Florida, signed an exclusive 10-year distribution agreement for a new allograft bone paste. The paste is designed to be administered in a moldable formulation, and has cohesive properties that are sustained in a wet environment, so that the implant could pack easily into the surgical site. Zimmer expects to receive the first shipments of the product in the fourth quarter of 2007. S&N expanded its orthopaedic cement offerings by entering an agreement to market and sell French firm Teknimed's Spine Fix bone cement in North America, Europe and Australia. Spine Fix is a self-hardening, ready-to-use bone cement for treatment of spinal compression fractures. It will be made available to the US market during the third quarter of 2007.
