Executive Summary
Barcelona's Hospital Clinic has successfully performed Europe's first - and world's only second - transvaginal kidney extirpation, in a patient with renal carcinoma. The operation, modelled on the Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) principle, where entry to the peritoneal cavity is gained by means of controlled transvisceral incisions, backed by standard flexible video endoscopes, was described by head of urology Antonio Alcaraz as marking a "key milestone in the field of minimally invasive surgery".
