Volcano CE marks imaging system and catheter for coronary imaging

Vascular diagnostics specialist Volcano has CE marked its OCT (optical coherence tomography) imaging system and catheter for sale in Europe. The product allows physicians to image diseased arteries from the inside to assess lesions. Volcano (San Diego, California) already markets intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) devices for this type of imaging, but OCT produces extremely high-quality three-dimensional images, with higher resolution than other imaging methods like ultrasound. The system could be used for image-guided percutaneous coronary intervention or the evaluation of drug-eluting stents. Volcano plans to launch the OCT system in Europe in 2011, and also hopes to carry out a trial to support US approval this year.
