Executive Summary
Given Imaging has launched its PillCam Colon 2 video capsule at the Gastro 2009 conference, held in London, UK, this week. The Yoqneam, Israel-based firm CE marked the device for sale in Europe in September (www.clinica.co.uk, September 15 2009). The next-generation product provides "superior imaging" compared with the original PillCam Colon, Given said. Neither device is currently approved by the US FDA. The company also presented results from a study in 98 patients with risks for or symptoms of colon cancer. It found that, compared with colonoscopy, PillCam Colon 2 had a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 76% in detecting polyps of 6mm or larger, which rose to 88% and 89%, respectively, in polyps of at least 10mm.
