Executive Summary
Gary Guthart, president and chief operating officer of surgical robotics company Intuitive Surgical, is to be promoted to president and CEO, effective from 2010. He succeeds Lonnie Smith, who will retain his role as chairman. Mr Smith led the Sunnyvale, California firm from its earliest stages to become a global organisation, recognised for its da Vinci surgical system. The plan for his succession by Mr Guthart, who joined Intuitive in 1996 with an engineering background, has been in process for the past several years, said the firm.
