The Spanish health ministry has officially unveiled a national plan for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), highlighting early detection as its primary aim. Approved in June by the interterritorial council (of regional health authorities), the plan envisages the introduction of screening programmes and better access to spirometry testing in all health centres. Its six-point action plan also promises to "open new R&D avenues in this area".
