OTC paternity tests raise questions of counselling

Last week, the first over-the-counter (OTC) DNA paternity testing kit from a UK company was launched by Anglia DNA, a provider of paternity, maternity and sibling testing services, based in Norwich. Costing £29.99 plus £129 for laboratory fees, the test is intended to give couples “peace of mind” without the involvement of lawyers, according to Dr Thomas Haizel, Anglia DNA’s founder. Indeed, the test results will not stand up in court, and the samples can be collected in the privacy of people’s own home without the involvement of a medical professional.
