Cardinal Health, Steris face suit after hospital mix-up

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Health products and services provider Cardinal Health and decontamination services company Steris are facing a class action lawsuit after patients at two hospitals were exposed to surgical instruments that had been sterilised in hydraulic waste fluid. The suit, involving 67 plaintiffs, said that an elevator company had used empty sterilisation fluid barrels to discard hydraulic waste fluid at the Duke Health Raleigh Hospital in North Carolina. These barrels were then collected by Cardinal Health and mistakenly restocked and shipped to Raleigh Hospital and Durham Regional Hospital (also in North Carolina). The hospitals used the hydraulic fluid in these barrels to sterilise instruments in November and December 2004.
