Nexgen Spine has CE marked its Physio-L lumbar artificial disc for sale in Europe. It is an elastomeric prosthesis for patients with degenerative disc disease, which is designed to closely mimic the mechanical properties of the natural disc. The device is a significant advance over current disc prostheses, the Whippany, New Jersey-based firm claims. It is made of polymeric elastomers which Nexgen says combine excellent mechanical strength with the ability to flex safely under the body's loads. Physio-L is implanted into skeletally-mature patients between the third lumbar and first sacral vertebrae. The company is also developing Physio-C for the cervical section of the spine.
