With Canada’s Chalk River nuclear reactor closed again for repairs, the prospect of a global shortage in medical isotopes has reared its ugly head once more. This time, however, the return to business as normal for the reactor, which produces about 50% of the world’s isotope supply, may not happen as quickly as it did after the last closure for repairs in December 2007.
