The Accu-Chek Spirit ambulatory insulin infusion pump, manufactured by Roche Diagnostics, is the subject of an alert issued yesterday by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), warning diabetics that their insulin therapy could be compromised if they are using one of the affected devices. A total of 2,616 devices (all serial numbers up to and including 10006093) have a potential design fault involving the failure of their "up" and "down" arrow buttons. The fault, affecting one or more of the buttons, has been reported in 96 pumps in the UK (i.e. 3.7% of those sold in this country). The Accu-Chek pump has been on the UK market since May 2005; just under 2,000 diabetics are thought to be affected by the fault.
